Looking around in the game market I can rarely see new game mechanics. The reason is that they are easy to implement, they don’t require ideas, experiments. There is a small chance that they will fail by making another super realistic FPS.
An AAA company can not afford to build a game, that’s only interesting for a few. They want to maximize their profit and make a game that is expected from them.
This is the reason why we have over 15 Call of Duty games.
I’ve looked up the Steam store’s popular games and the sad pattern is that we have the combinations of the followings:
- 3D First person
- 3D Third person
- 2D Top-down
- 2D Side scroller
- Fight with/against others
- Experience the story
- Build and manage something
- Reach a to point in map
Of course I missed something. This is not a complete list. Also it isn’t hard to find a real unique game in the steam store, but these categories can easily describe a huge part of the games out there and I think it is a problem.
I don’t say these are bad games and ideas, I like playing with them sometimes. My point is that they are bad examples for beginner developers. They don’t develop the overall game development (haha). They don’t encourage new or old developers to think about something different. Even my first game was a top-down shooter. It was a good practice, but I wasn’t proud of it.
I don’t want to make this post super long so that’s all. I think I’ve expressed my problem clearly. If you have questions you can comment below.
